Yes. Bitdefender is a 25-year-old security company with audited controls, a long record in independent lab tests, and over 1,100 ratings for GravityZone across three business review platforms. Reviewers' complaints are about service: slow support and a console that takes time to learn.
The details below come from Bitdefender's own published audits, the test labs' own reports, and the reviews on this site.

Who owns Bitdefender
Bitdefender grew out of SOFTWIN, a Romanian software firm, and took its current name in 2001. Founder Florin Talpeș is CEO and the main shareholder. In 2017 the London private equity firm Vitruvian Partners bought a 30% stake, which valued the company at more than $600 million. It reported €330 million in revenue for 2024 and has more than 2,000 staff (Wikipedia).
It has bought three security firms in recent years: Horangi Cyber Security in Singapore (2023), the BitShield division (February 2025), and Mesh Security, an email security company (2025). Bitdefender also licenses its detection engine to other security vendors, and it says more than 150 technology brands use it.
The audits Bitdefender publishes
Its certifications page lists a SOC 2 Type 2 report covering security, availability, and confidentiality for November 16, 2024 to November 15, 2025, an annual HIPAA Security Rule audit, and ISO 27001, 27017 (cloud security), 27018 (personal data in the cloud), and 9001 certificates dated 2026. The first page of each report is public; the full SOC 2 report is available on request, which is standard practice.
For a buyer, the SOC 2 report is the one to request. It covers the GravityZone cloud service your endpoint data flows through, and a security questionnaire from your own customers or insurer will usually ask for it.
How GravityZone does in independent tests
Test labs are the best outside check on whether security software works, and GravityZone's record there is strong. AV-Comparatives runs a Business Security Test twice a year. Across the six reports from 2023 to 2025, 2,901 real-world attack cases in total, GravityZone was compromised 3 times. CrowdStrike Falcon Pro was compromised 28 times and Microsoft Defender 29 times in the same tests.
In AV-Comparatives' 2026 Endpoint Prevention and Response test, Bitdefender was one of 11 certified products out of 14. It scored 99.7% on prevention and response across 50 attack scenarios, level with VIPRE and behind only Elastic (100%). Its five-year cost per agent ($225) was the third lowest. AV-TEST gave Bitdefender Business Security its Best Protection 2025 award for corporate users. In MITRE's 2024 managed services evaluation, Bitdefender sent 82 alerts, the fewest of the 11 participants.
Labs test configured products under controlled conditions. They tell you the engine is good. They don't tell you how quickly support answers or how long setup takes, and that is where the complaints are.
Security incidents worth knowing
On March 20, 2010, a faulty Bitdefender update classified every program and DLL file as infected on computers running 64-bit Windows. It is the incident people still bring up.
In April 2025, Bitdefender disclosed three vulnerabilities in the GravityZone console and update server (CVE-2025-2243, CVE-2025-2244, and CVE-2025-2245). The worst, rated 9.5, let an attacker run commands on the console host. Console version 6.41.2-1 fixed them (Heise). If you run the on-premises console, check that it is on 6.41.2-1 or later.
What GravityZone users complain about
We publish every critical review we collect. Across the 3 platforms on this site, three complaints repeat: support is slow to answer, the console has a learning curve, and the agent can weigh on older PCs and Macs. Small businesses without IT staff are the most frustrated.
“I do not like having to correspond by email. When I have an issue I do not have time to wait 6-8 hours for a reply.”Carol Heim, TrustRadius, August 2019
“Support articles were frustratingly incomplete, either assuming completion of prior steps, or not achieving desired results when (I believe) following through step by step.”Nathan M., Capterra, November 2025
“Tech documents are written for tech professionals.”Scott Ingham, TrustRadius, March 2021
Plan for setup time, or buy through a partner or managed service provider who will run it for you. Read the critical reviews before you decide.

Is Bitdefender a legitimate company?+
Yes. Florin Talpeș founded Bitdefender in Bucharest, Romania, in 2001, and he is still its CEO and main shareholder. The company is privately held, reported €330 million in revenue for 2024, and employs more than 2,000 people. GravityZone, its business product, has been on the market for over a decade and is reviewed on Gartner Peer Insights, Capterra, TrustRadius, PeerSpot, and G2.
Is Bitdefender safe to use in the United States?+
Bitdefender is a Romanian company, and Romania is an EU and NATO member. It is not covered by the 2024 US Commerce Department ban on Kaspersky software, and Bitdefender actively sells to US organizations replacing Kaspersky. Its SOC 2 Type 2 report and HIPAA audit are both done to US standards.
Has Bitdefender ever had a security problem?+
Yes, two worth knowing about. In March 2010 a faulty update flagged legitimate Windows files as malware on 64-bit systems. In April 2025 Bitdefender disclosed three vulnerabilities in the GravityZone console, one rated 9.5 out of 10, and fixed them in console version 6.41.2-1.
What do users complain about?+
In the reviews we aggregate, the recurring complaints are slow support, a management console that takes time to learn, and resource use on older machines and Macs. Detection quality is rarely the complaint.
Is the 30-day money-back guarantee real?+
Bitdefender's refund policy for online business purchases offers a full refund within 30 days of a first-time order and a 30-day window to request a refund after an automatic renewal. Refunds go through its reseller, 2Checkout. Licenses bought through a partner follow the partner's terms.
